Disappointed so far December 31, 2008 jrw (MD) My wife bought this for me this Christmas and I was excited to try it out. She also purchased the Heineken 5L mini-keg which was chilled and had been sitting in our garage for about 24 hours. I installed it per the instructions which wasn't too difficult at all. After the unit had reached the proper temperature (about 39 degrees), we poured a couple glasses. I was surprised, especially after reading reviews on this website, that we hardly got any foam at all in our beer. Actually, it wasn't enough at all. We had to keep the glass level to get any foam, as opposed to tilting it like the instructions say to do. Also, the beer seemed to taste a little flat. After a few days it was time to get another keg. OK, the next keg (also Heineken) was purchased from our local beer store and I installed it when I got home. It was already chilled and it didn't suffer any movement on the way home. It was connected just like the previous keg, same steps as before. After a couple hours, and making sure the temperature was correct, I tried a glass from this new keg. To my amazement, nothing but foam. After it settled, there was about 1 inch of beer in a 6-8 inch high beer glass. I checked the installation and saw that there was a little curve (very slight) in the dispensing tube coming out from the keg, and straightened it out. I tried another glass and it was only slightly better, not much at all. Again, the beer tastes slightly flat, not like it would from a bottle or a draft from your favorite bar. I'll be interested to see what keg #3 might hold in store. If not better, I think I'm going to see if we can return it and get something a little more reliable and predictable. Something else....the Heineken 5L kegs seem to run about $21-23. My calculation shows that a 5L is equivalent to about 14 beers. A 12 pack costs around $15, so a 14 pack should be about $17.50 or so. Why the inflated cost for the keg? I suppose you're paying a lot for convenience, either that or the price of foam has gone up recently. Cheers
Terrible product with deceptive advertising December 9, 2008 Sam Adams (Phoenix) I purchased this beer dispenser and was shocked to find out that a 5 and 1/2 liter keg would only last 24 hours! This was nowhere in their advertisements of the product. How many people would have bought this product if they had known you can only keep the keg for twenty four hours? Not many, I'm sure. Much of the beer is wasted on foam and begins to go flat after the first twenty-four hours. For Chilling, all I see is a cheapo excessively loud fan, I guess that's all that's needed for a 24hr keg. Big mistake in buying this product!
Perfect for Heineken September 8, 2008 A. Work (Los Angeles, CA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This item is awesome. It works with all types of beer, as well as HEINEKEN - MY FAVORITE. My wife also uses it with wine because it comes with a huge plastic container. I just used it for a football party and it was perfect. My friends loved and they are all going to buy one. Thanks Icycold - you made my party a hit!!
ICY...............NOT!!!! August 17, 2008 B. Wayne Heath Don't waste your money with this beer dispenser. The only 5L kegs available in our area are Heineken and when I received this unit I soon found out the Heineken adapter it came with does not work. I received a updated adapter with a phone call. I tried it out this week-end only to wind up with the dispenser body full of beer and an empty keg. There were no leaks when I installed the adapter. This is a simple adapter so there were no missed instructions, just a poor design. On another note, before that the unit would not get colder than 45 degrees even with the keg already at 38 degrees.
Do not waste your time, money, or effort with this thing January 29, 2008 SWJ (Los Angeles) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
1. The connector for the plastic bottle would not connect properly which caused the bottle to leak within the refrigeration chamber. This was not a big deal to me as I planned on dispensing beer only. But..... 2. I was able to successfully connect a Coors Light mini- keg without much trouble, but what was dispensed was mostly foam: A 10" glass, for example, produced 8 inches of foam to 2 inches of beer. NOTHING, and I do mean NOTHING could be done to rectify this problem. 3. The Coors Light keg, and others like it, requires that the air pressure hose be connected and the air pressure switch enabled (which is how the beer is able to be dispensed from a non-pressurized can, but is also the reason for all of the foam). The Heineken's can, with its more advanced design, need not be connected to the air hose. You simply place the keg within the unit and connect it to the dispenser tubing using the handy-dandy Heineken's keg adaptor generously supplied by the manufacturer --- Simple, but the adaptor DOES NOT WORK! The device cannot be pressed down enough to point of penetrating and thus tapping the Heineken keg!! In its favor, the refrigeration portion of the unit seems to function well. I believe that if whatever liquid you put in it would chill just fine. And if you purchased an empty mini-keg (or recycle an empty Coors Light keg) then you could dispense any non-carbonated liquid using this machine....BUT I BOUGHT IT TO DISPENSE BEER AND IT DOESN'T WORK. It was a good idea that, in my opinion, was rushed to market without first working all of the `bugs' out Caveat emptor, my friends. I bought mine from Costco, so I have high hopes that returning this lousy machine will not be a problem.
