Product Description
The Worm Factory automatically separates food scraps from finished compost. The Worm Factory is easy to set up and easy to use. Simply fill the bottom tray with red wiggler worms, bedding and food scraps. Place the lid inside the top tray to provide light cover with proper ventilation. As the worms finish digesting, they will migrate upward into the tray above, leaving rich castings behind. The liquid created from the worm castings can be effortlessly drained as liquid fertilizer, also known as worm tea, from the easy-to-use spigot. It couldnt be easier or cleaner. The lid also provides proper ventilation so there are no unpleasant odors. Because its clean, mess free, and odor free, composting with The Worm Factory makes it possible to be placed indoors or outdoors for home owners and apartment dwellers alike. In full operation, the Worm Factory houses 10,000 to 12,000 worms, consumes 5 to 8 pounds of food a week, allowing you to harvest a full tray of nutrient rich castings every month. Each Worm Factory comes with simple but detailed instructions to help you get started. The Worm Factory is made in the U.S.A., constructed from high quality recycled plastic, comes in two colors with a limited 5 year warranty on materials and workmanship. 1 out of 5 stars Maggot Factory, more like it!   July 4, 2008

Be wary of the temperature guidelines, and if you think it's really okay to keep this IN YOUR KITCHEN, think again! I live in Florida and kept the worm factory on a shaded screened porch, but it was still hot enough to attract flies and breed maggots. We moved it to our back yard in a shady area, where it became a roach hotel. Maybe we'll try again in the fall when it's cool, but I think it's best to stick to traditional composting in warmer climes. . .

5 out of 5 stars A very handy way to raise worms   May 8, 2008

I have the five tray system an love the Worm Factory. The Worm Factory has been my most pleasant experience in raising worms. You absolutely can raise red wrigglers in a plastic tub. This system is better for many reasons. Unlike a plastic tub you tend to worry about this system staying too moist, as it trays help distribute the moisture. The worms can also navigate to the tray that they like best, whether they want to tunnel around in the food layer, or the more fiberous layers that you may have.

Another large benefit of this system is you do not need to worry when you harvest your castings. Simply stop feeding in one of the lower trays, and feed in the tray above it. This way the worms will move, and you will not have to worry about tossing out your worms and worm eggs when you harvest the castings into your garden.

I did a lot of reading up on this system, and since I live so far in the north I was looking for a system that could be odorless and be kept inside during the winter. This system is odorless. I really can't say enough about how well designed this system is, it really makes vermiculture easy.

5 out of 5 stars 4-story worm condominium   May 6, 2007

In 3 weeks, the worms have really demonstrated their appreciation of their new home. They are athletic - zooming around all over, eating well, and reproducing. It's convenient [except the top is drippy if you need to put it down somewhere] and is just what I was expecting. A word of caution though - the coir brick expands A LOT with water. Make sure you have a large container.

I have had mine for about 3 years now and it works great. The directions that came with it eventually ended up in the composter. I suggest reading up on worm composting to get a better idea on how to use it. I put most of my food waste in it. I had to purchase a few more trays so that it would last the winter without emptying the trays. The worms don't like the cold. I highly recomend this. The great thing about this is that it so simple to maintain. I have left mine alone for a few months and in the spring there is always enough worms to start over. My gardens just love this stuff.
