Amazon.com Review Let's face it. Most vacuums just don't cut it when it comes to really cleaning a home or office. Pesky pet hair embeds deeper in carpet than traditional vacuums go; bits and pieces of tracked-in dirt and debris hunker down under floor trim just out of reach of the latest brush innovations, rendering us to the silliness of handpicking behind that expensive vacuum, filling our pockets with lint, and wondering-who's really the boss? Troubles like these made the folks at Eureka get down and dirty and, ultimately, design the Boss Smart-Vac Upright Vacuum. Offering powerful performance for everyday household cleaning, the Eureka Boss is the solution for people who insist on having a truly clean home. The Boss's Direct Air Control System features an air selector switch that lets you direct all suction either deep into the carpet or to the hose for easy above-the-floor cleaning. The Power Paw brush makes it easy to clean stairs and upholstery, and even claws up embedded pet hair, so Fido can spend more time inside. The motorized brush lets you go from carpet- to bare floor-cleaning with the flick of a switch. The Boss Smart-Vac is powered by a beefy, 12-amp motor that provides plenty of suction power for deep cleaning carpets, and leaves nothing behind on hard floors. Pretty smart; right? Well, here's the really smart part. The Boss Smart-Vac isn't just the best household carpet- and floor-cleaning vacuum on the market; it's also equipped with a unique, sealed HEPA filtration system that captures 99.97 percent of dust, pollen, allergens, and bacteria. So, vacuuming the house doesn't mean you have to dust afterward, or sneeze while you're doing it. Cleaner carpets and cleaner indoor air at the same time! Plus, the Boss is loaded with user-friendly features to take the frustration out of vacuuming. A wide cleaning path covers a lot of ground quickly before company comes. And, unlike inferior models, the Boss is designed with a brush-view window that shows you how hard it's working, letting you actually see the powerful brush roller remove dirt from carpets and floors. The exclusive dust trap system captures debris and dust in three stages. A handy stretch hose extends to five times its original length for reaching around furniture and sucking the cobwebs off the ceiling. And, a 30-foot cord won't leave you coming up short. The bare floor brush is designed to smoothly glide across wood and tile floors while picking up more dust and debris in corners and along baseboards than any other model. --Brian Olson

works well, but very HEAVY February 21, 2010 PatriciaH500 (Los Angeles, CA USA) Great suction, cleans very well, but this vacuum is very big and very heavy. Since it is so big, it is hard to reach into smaller spaces in my apartment without using the attachments. But primarily I have trouble manipulating because it so very heavy and requires a lot of arm and wrist strength. From the reviews, I knew this vacuum would be heavy, but I got it anyway because I needed to replace a convenient light-weight vacuum that did not have good suction and easily overheated. After six months, this one still runs well and cleans very well. Another small design flaw is that the electrical cord extends from the machine strangely lower to the ground than in other upright vacuums. This means that you must hold the cord in one hand (so you don't run over it) while you push the heavy vacuum with your other hand.
Worth every dollar. February 17, 2010 V. surney (USA) I did all the research, and took a leap of faith. I had wanted a Dyson for years, but I am SO GLAD I bought this instead. It has all the suction, and is much easier on the pocket book. I do wish it was longer in the hose section. It works fabulous on bare floors, and the power is unbelievable. Be sure to buy alot of extra bags, because you will really fill it the first couple weeks, if you vacuum daily like I do. My best friend bought this too (the pet one)..........And she RAVES about it. It's a superior vacuum. It's heavy, but you get used to it.
Two years later..... February 16, 2010 Amazonite Bought this in January 2008. Used it today and made me think that I should put a review on what a good, reliable workhorse this vacuum is. Gets very heavy use with 2 active kids, 2 hairy dogs, pool, rural setting, 3-story home with various flooring types. Never had a problem, very easy to use. My one tip is to check the bag before every use and change it as soon as it is at the full line, makes a huge difference in performance.
Not that great! February 12, 2010 Jay (Oshkosh, WI) I have had and used this vaccum 2/week for 7 years. It's very heavy and I don't need any more of that since I am always lifting my 2 small children. I can vacuum over a spot 4times and look later, it's still not clean. It just doesn't do that thorough of a job-- and it also sucks up small rugs, and something in there is burning-- I can smell the smoke. Not good! It's very plastic-y and bulky, and parts have broken off. Also, where the hose plugs in to the machine, this comes undone quite a bit and so I'm vaccuming and find out what I just sucked up is now back on the floor. Annoying! Finally, this doesn't seem particularly HEPA friendly to me. I can see the dust particles as I vaccum. When I take the bag off the machine, a cloud of dust often shoots up into my face. I have bad allergies! I'm not impressed. Things I do like: long 30 ft cord (I can clean my whole home via plugging it in only twice), reach tool, height adjuster (to compensate for thickness of rug or bare floor) and the bags seem to fit pretty well and can acomodate a lot of dirt. I'm a teacher and I'd give it a C, maybe a D.
Not all that great. February 7, 2010 Karen Stevens (Chicago, IL) We bought the Smart Boss because Consumer Reports rated it very high. I am very disappointed in how easy it is to use. The vacuum cleaner is very big, heavy, and hard to maneuver. The pedal to release the top portion, or handle is very hard to use. It takes a lot of strength to push the pedal down enough to release it. I also find it very difficult to go from the carpet mode to the floor mode. In order to change modes, you have to push a lever that moves the brush for the different modes. This lever is very difficult to push. It takes both of my hands to push hard enough to move the brushes. I think it is sufficient in how powerful the unit is, but since I find it difficult to maneuver, I do not use it that much.
